The Dears fourth studio album - Missiles - is out now! Go get it!
THIS WEEK THE DEARS ARE OFFICIALLY RELEASING A NEW ALBUM CALLED “MISSILES.” WORLDWIDE. IT IS SO KICK-ASS. DON’T BE SHY: PLEASE GO OUT TO YOUR LOCAL RECORD STORE AND BUY IT, DEMAND IT, IF YOU MUST. MAKE IT AN EVENT. NOTHING ELSE THIS WEEK IS AS IMPORTANT AS THIS. DON’T DO ANYTHING ELSE WHILE LISTENING TO IT. DON’T ANSWER YOUR PHONE OR ACCEPT/SEND TEXT MESSAGES OR CHECK YOUR EMAIL OR NAVIGATE CITY TRAFFIC OR TRY TO COOK DINNER OR VACCUUM YOUR HOUSE. TURN OUT THE LIGHTS AND SUCCUMB THE WAY WE DID WHEN WE MADE IT. SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN FOR 58 MINUTES AND 16 SECONDS. IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO EXPERIENCE THIS ALBUM. DON’T LET ANY SHITTY/TEPID REVIEWS THROW YOU BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T GET IT; THEY WERE RIFLING THROUGH A PILE OF CDS (UNDERSTANDABLY) TRYING TO TO MAKE A DEADLINE AND ULTIMATELY DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYTHING IMPORTANT. OR THEY JUST PLAIN HATE THE DEARS BECAUSE THEY HATE THEMSELVES WHICH IS SAD BECAUSE THIS RECORD WAS MADE WITH ONLY LOVE, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. THIS IS FOR YOU, ABOUT YOU. YES, YOU. TRY AND FIGHT IT BUT IT’S TRUE. CLOSE YOUR EYES, SPREAD OUT YOUR BODY AND FALL BACKWARDS INTO IT. BY THE END YOU WILL HAVE GATE-CRASHED HEAVEN WITH GOD HIMSELF HOLDING YOU IN HIS ARMS, STROKING YOUR HAIR SO GENTLY THAT YOU WON’T EVER LIVE YOUR LIFE THE SAME WAY AGAIN. WE PROMISE THAT IF YOU LISTEN TO IT THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED THAT YOU WILL HAVE A TRULY GREAT EXPERIENCE AND MAY EVEN HAVE A REALLY GOOD CRY. LIKE SHIVER TO THE BONE CRY.
RETURN THE RICK, YOU BASTARDS!

On 9 September, Peter Buck’s legendary Rickenbacker was stolen directly after an REM show in Helsinki, Finland. Taken from the stage.
The band are appealing for information on the whereabouts of the black Rickenbacker 360 guitar, which Buck has used consistently since the band’s debut 1982 EP ‘Chronic Town’.
A spokesperson for the group explained that there’s a “generous” reward waiting for anyone who can recover the instrument.
“This instrument means a great deal to Peter and to REM. It is our sincere hope that whoever is responsible for the loss, or whoever has information which can help recover the guitar, will come forward to receive a generous reward, no questions asked,” they said.
Anyone with any information is urged to email fanclub@remtour.com or phone (001) 707 3536689.

Famous Montréalers #2: Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen - musician, writer, poet. Born and raised in Westmount, three blocks away from where I sit and write this, Cohen is probably our most famous son.

William Gibson’s Playlist
Katrina | August 30, 2008 | 4:07 pm“I have always regarded music with lyrics as a species of fiction.”

I’m a book-slut, as well as a swim-slut. Authors are my heroes, and I’m always fascinated by what they do when they’re not pouring their souls into their books.
Back in June, The New York Times published a blog featuring William Gibson’s Playlist - ten tracks which, no doubt, will set me off on a new musical direction.
