How can so many Canadians be so stupid?

Katrina | October 15, 2008 | 1:34 pm

You re-elected Harper. You fucking re-elected Harper.

For those that don’t know what the problem is…. Stephen Harper is Baby-Bush.

Yes.

I woke up this morning to the equivalent of the US re-electing Bush.

It’s upsetting.

In times of financial crisis, why did we vote for the party for business? The party that will protect business over the worker, the parent, the family.

Conservative Canada. An oxymoron?

Thank god we’re still in minority Government.

We have many parties. The party with the most votes becomes the leading party, their party leader is our Prime Minister. BUT. If the number of seats that the leading party holds is less than half the number of available seats, they’re the ruling party in minority government.

Which means that…. what policies the Goverment puts forwards, potentially, it can get voted down by the majority, which is formed of the other parties. And it’s because the other parties wouldn’t pass anything that we went to a Federal Election, as the government was not productive.

Alas, the Conservatives have increased their number, but still not enough to be a majority party. There’s still hope.

It’s the South West that’s the problem. Saskatchewan, and Alberta, and a lot of British Columbia.

Quebec will always be mostly Bloc Quebecois. Ontario is becoming more New Democrat.

What do we have to do to stop this madness?

Wait a second….

Katrina | October 13, 2008 | 9:36 pm

If it walks like a duck, and quack like a duck, it’s a duck. Right?

See below.

Kyle Maclachlan - looks Canadian. Talks like a Canadian. Is AMERICAN.

It’s such a head-fuck.

More politics….

Katrina | September 24, 2008 | 11:32 pm

So, you’ve had my views on the politics across the border. (Vote Obama!)

But so far, I’ve not put forward my view on what’s happening in my own dear country.

We’re having a general election, our parliament is to be dissolved, and we’re going to the polls.

And the reason I haven’t really written about it is that…. no one really cares.

Stephen Harper is our Prime Minister, and he’s an idiot. A Conservative idiot, in a minority Government.

And he’s called an election, only 2 years after the last one.

Where all the parties stand:

Party view comparisons

Famous Montréalers #2: Leonard Cohen

Katrina | September 4, 2008 | 8:22 pm

“Give me a Leonard Cohen after-world…. so I can sigh eternally” - Nirvana, Pennyroyal Tea.

Leonard Cohen - musician, writer, poet. Born and raised in Westmount, three blocks away from where I sit and write this, Cohen is probably our most famous son.

Famous Montréal-ers #1: William Shatner

Katrina | September 2, 2008 | 8:45 pm

On 22 March 1931, William Alan Shatner was born in Montréal.

Yes. Captain Kirk was born here. OK, so he’s not just known for his work as Captain Kirk.

He’s also a recording artist, who has recorded with the likes of Ben Folds. His version of Pulp’s Common People is a classic.

William Shatner is Canadian. Not American. And not only is he Canadian, but he’s a Quebecker. A Montréaler. We should be proud. Sir, I salute you.

All you need to know about: Hockey Hair (and loose morals and crazy British slang)

Katrina | | 7:26 pm

So, just to spice up this whole dull election business, McCain picks out a VP who can appease the Christian Right… whilst at the same time sending them apoplectic. 17 year old gets pregnant. Whoo-hoo. She’s not the one standing for VP…. she’s just one being forced into marriage - because, yeah, sure, marrying for the sake of a baby ALWAYS leads to long term happiness and security, right?

But whatever. Jamie Lynn Spears did pregnancy at 16. 17 is just SO three years ago.

I’m more concerned that:

a - the daughter has been named Bristol. My time in England left me with the knowledge that “Bristols” are slang for tits.

b - the baby daddy has HOCKEY HAIR!

So. Um. Hockey Hair?

The Mullet. The Neckwarmer. The Mistake.

Craving of the day

Katrina | August 1, 2008 | 4:48 pm

Poutine! The Québec comfort food of choice - fries, gravy & squeakers. Squeakers being cheese curds. Now, the BEST poutine has to have really REALLY fresh cheese curds, straight from the cheese factory. And it’s nearly impossible to find at 10 a.m.

Visit MaPoutine.ca for reviews of poutine joints, and pictures of poor yumminess.

Gawd Bless Amerikuh

Katrina | July 13, 2008 | 2:15 am

I received an email today, from a friend who resides on The Wrong Side of Canada.

“Get this! My friend Sheena is a photographer, and her specialty is taking photos of dogs. People hire her all the time after seeing her stuff on-line. So, last week she was hired by a couple in Seattle to come down and photograph their 14 year-old border collie before it dies.

So, she heads down to the States this morning. She gets to the border crossing. They ask her to step out of her van. They ask her what she has in the bag. She replies that it’s her camera and equipment. They ask why she has it with her. She tells them that she’s been hired to take photos. They say, “please step inside ma’am”. She goes into the customs office where they fingerprint her and take her photo. They take her passport, and then make her wait for over an hour as they ‘do some checking’.

An hour later, they finally give her back her passport and say, “you can’t come into the country and take photos”. She asks why not. They say, “because it is taking jobs away from American photographers”. Uhhhh, I’m sorry, what? They say, “we have photographers here, and you’re taking their jobs from them by coming down here. It would be like us coming to Canada and mopping your floors”. She explains that she is a professional photographer, and that people from all over hire her (and pay her) through her web site. They don’t care. They tell her that she should have no trouble coming through the border in the future, but she can’t go down there and take photos. Then they send her on her way.

Brutal, eh? Unbelievable.”

OK, she could have lied and said she’s an Amateur photographer. Which is fine. She’d have got in to the country with no problems. But no, she was honest about wanting to steal work from the hundreds of thousands of specialist dog photographers plaguing the unemployment lines in the US…. And got fingerprinted in the process.

We oughta arrange a US Dog/Canadian Camera convention, all along the borders.

Sheena’s blog is at http://threewoofs.blogspot.com
